Islamic Studies

Students of Nur-Ul-Islam Academy take Islamic Studies and Quran classes four times a week daily. This program offers an opportunity to study and develop a basic understanding of the theory and practice of the religion of Islam. Islamic Studies curriculum covers a wide range of topics that are presented throughout the Middle/High School program. It builds on the foundation of the program offered in the elementary school. The Islamic Studies program covers the following:

Islamics I allows the student to be introduced to the basic beliefs of a Muslim. The fundamental pillars of Islam (i.e.: shahada: declaration of faith; salaah: the five prayers; zakaah: the paying of alms; siyam: fasting; and hajj: pilgrimage) are explored.

Islamics II involves an in-depth study of the various characters mentioned in the Quran and how they were able to affect people's lives both positively and negatively. Attention is paid to its application in the lives of students. The student will develop a clear understanding of the life, ministry, and teachings of Prophet Muhammad ( peace be upon him). Students will also memorize and study the implication of selected passages from the Quran with the objective of internalizing that knowledge.

Islamics III allows the students to explore the primary and secondary sources of Islamic Law, viz.: Quran, Sunnah/Hadith, Qiyas, Ijmaa etc. Emphasis is placed on the origin, transmittance, compilation, and application of the two primary sources. Students will also memorize and study the implication of selected passages from the Quran with the objective of internalizing that knowledge. The different sects and schools are investigated and their impact on Islam from within and beyond the Muslim community.

Islamics IV focuses on different sociological views on origins of the universe; various world views and schools of thought affecting current attitudes toward Islam and Muslims are discussed. Its purpose is to prepare Muslim students for interaction with a secular environment.

Islamics V provides the opportunity for students to analyze various Islamic role models and their effect upon the societies in which they lived. Students will also view current world awareness topics from an Islamic perspective; compare religions from the basis of origin and understand how they have impacted the lives of the great multitude of believing men and women throughout history; and recognize that in spite of religious differences, they should be respectful to all and work in pursuit of the development of their community and society as a whole.
