Extra-Curricular Activities

Nur-Ul-Islam Academy offers different kinds of extracurricular activities for Pre-School, Elementary, and High School in accordance to the students' age levels. These activities reinforce what is taught in the classroom and also give our students the experience to acquire knowledge about various aspects of life.

Lower School

In order to further enhance our student's pre-kindergarten experience, we offer a series of extracurricular activities. The following are the extracurricular activities offered to our students:

Performance Arts - This includes stage shows, dramatic plays, skits, concerts, music classes and other activities that help improve and develop self-esteem, confidence, and self-awareness.

Swimming Classes - these classes help promote and develop gross motor skills, as well as coordination in a fun and enjoyable environment.

Fields Trip - To reinforce what is taught in the classroom and to facilitate outdoors exploration.

Arts and Craft - Promotes creativity and individuality.

Gardening-Outdoor-Hands-On projects such as gardening that allow children to explore at their own pace and engage in the experimental learning to process and manage emotions, and develop important skills (self confidence, literacy, math, science skills) that will help them be more successful in school.

Elementary School

NUIA introduced the Elementary School to the 4 – H program four years ago with an affiliation to the University of Florida. The four H's stand for head, heart, hand, and health. The program promotes positive values, social responsibility, and lifelong learning in a hands-on learning style. Nur Ul Islam staff works with students on specific projects in Arts and crafts, Indoor and outdoor gardening, Music Appreciation, Movie making, Chess Club, technology, film making, safety and first aid, nutrition, sewing, performance arts, and Sports. These activities are offered in different clubs for 90 minutes per week that the students choose per term. Annually students participate for competition at the County and District levels, which helps enhance their confidence, self-esteem, and interaction with other communities.

4H Club - is open to all elementary students, grades 1 through 5. At Nur-Ul-Islam, the 4-H program offers hands-on educational and fun projects in many different areas. These projects and experiences help students learn how to make decisions, develop life skills, and actively participate in the home and community.

Secondary School

Over the last 4 years the upper school upgraded its extracurricular activities. The school now has a functioning Student Government Association, Debate Club, Drama Club, and an after school athletic program. This year the school has also formed "houses", which comprise students' from every grade level in the upper school program, and competes in several activities for points towards a grand prize at the end of the school year. The formation of extracurricular activities is hindered by transportation problems for many students after school. The groups, therefore, have to meet during the lunch period, which restricts the number of clubs that can function at any one given time. To ease this problem, the parent body also works with the school to develop after school activities, and with local businesses that also serve as fundraisers for the school.

The following are some of those activities that the entire student body participates in:

News Letter Club: A society of students that is responsible for the publication of events, activities, and other related programs. These students publish newsletters, which are distributed to the entire student body and parents.

Year Book: A yearbook is published at the end of every academic year in which the events and the activities of the year are chronicled. Students, under guidance of the English department, take on the assignment as an annual project.

Academic Fair: Academic Fair is an annual event that students participate in at the county level. All students are encouraged to participate. The teachers, parents and other members of the community evaluate projects. Students are judged on knowledge, creativity, and presentation.

Science Fair In-School & County Fair: The students participate in the school science fair for students from grade 1-12. The county science fair is only for middle and high school students. The Science fair helps students gain interest in science, math, and engineering. It also provides an educational experience through participation in scientific research and gives public recognition to students for the work that they have done. It also provides students an opportunity to experience professional scientific knowledge.

Social Studies in-School & County Fair: A Social Studies fair is intended to guide students to identify key elements in a social studies project. It allows students to describe how those elements should be developed and to give information to teachers and other students. As the science fair, students from grade 1-12 participate in-school competitions, and the county fair is only for middle and high school students.

Literary Fair: Students participate in the Broward County Annual Academic Fair. They submit works from their portfolio for the various categories in the annual Literary Fair handbook. After students are graded internally by judges, the winner for each category is then submitted by the coordinator to be judged by the County.

Student Council: Annually the academy allows leadership roles among students with good academic and social standing. In the fourth week of the first quarter, students in the upper school submit their applications for office. The four main offices are: President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary. The position for President is limited to the senior class. Grades 6-12 also elect a class representative and deputy class representative for each grade to represent their class' interest and over- all student body interests at the weekly SGA meetings. This campus organization has accomplished raising funds and food for disaster victims, and for other non-profit organizations.

American Automotive Association School Patrols: Annually with the guidance of a designated faculty member, students that have exemplified excellent behavior and model citizenship are appointed to be patrols. Students from previous years are reviewed and reappointed to serve another year. Patrols assist in various supervisory roles with younger peers during snack, lunch, prayer and special events.

National Honor Society: The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1921 and 1929. Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of NHS. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service. Nur-ul-Islam Academy is proud to offer such an important academic association to our students.

Quranic Competition: is also an annual event. Students compete in the recitation of the Holy Quran and are evaluated based upon tajweed (rules of recitation). We challenge our students with the recitation and memorization of the Holy Quran. The spiritual experience the students gain prepares them to be strong in Faith and public speaking. It promotes understanding of the Quranic scripture and builds language skills.

Spelling Bee: Inter-class Spelling Bee contests are held annually to motivate the students to learn vocabulary and spelling. Students from all the Muslim schools in the state of Florida compete against each other. Parents are invited to witness the finals. Nur-Ul-Islam also participates in County Spelling Bees which improve students' spelling, increase their vocabularies, and helps develop proper English skills. It also helps students to read and write more effectively and score higher on standardized test, college prep tests and beyond. The impact lasts a lifetime.

Field Trips: Education is not confined to the classroom experience. All classes are given periodic exposures to museums, aquariums, amusement centers, factories, and many other educational facilities to enhance and expand their appreciation of and search for knowledge. Field trips are an essential part of the Academy's calendar of events. Juniors and seniors visit local universities in order to apply and explore the various requirements for admissions.

Summer School Program: A Summer School Program is arranged every year for academy and non-academy students. The program is designed to engage students in many indoor and outdoor recreational activities like ice skating, swimming, movies, art and craft, music while simultaneously addressing any deficiencies in reading and math skills.

Culture Day: Students explore the cultures and practices of many diverse nations.

Annual Carnival: The annual carnival is the major event that enhances social interaction and promotes community awareness.
